The Boys From Brooklyn: The Great Robbery, a brief excerpt below:

Fran’s explanation was right on the money, and Nicky knew it. One of Nicky’s favorite activities was reading, and he learned about lightning and thunder in a science book when he was ten years old. “That is the greatest scientific explanation I have ever heard of in my life!” Nicky shouted at her, his voice nearly knocking her down. “Are you sure? How do I know you’re not making it up?” Nicky playfully demanded, shaking his finger in her face.

“Because I read it in the Encyclopedia Britannica! But just to be sure, I asked Daddy, and he said that is how it happens.” Fran adored her father. He could do no wrong in her eyes, and as far as Fran was concerned, Joe Zucchero knew everything. “OK, OK, I believe you!” Nicky said, putting his hands up, as if to say: enough already, I’m satisfied! Fran’s face lit up with a proud smile from ear to ear. She was very satisfied with this accomplishment. She had just taught her older brother something. Nicky was also feeling very good.

When Nicky and Fran were younger, they would fight like cats and dogs, sometimes saying really mean things to each other. They would even try to get one another in trouble with their parents. But their relationship had started to change as they both grew older. They still fought, but not as much as before. At that moment, as he and his sister were watching the jagged lightning bolts spark across the dark sky, Nicky didn’t quite understand why he felt so good. He couldn’t realize it at the time, but he was starting to mature, starting to become more responsible. This added responsibility included looking out for his sister and trying to make her feel special. Over the last year or so, he had also started to become more protective of her.

There was an instance, earlier that summer, when Fran and Jimmy Colora were outside, arguing and yelling at each other about something stupid. The argument ended with Jimmy pushing Fran to the hard concrete sidewalk and Fran scraping her knees. Fran had rushed home, upset and shaken up. She was crying. Even though her knees stung from the scrape, it was really her spirit that had been hurt. Nicky was home at the time. Seeing his sister this upset really bothered him. As he listened to his little sister painfully tell him what happened, and as he watched the tears stream down her face, he felt his insides getting tighter and tighter. After Fran finished telling him what happened, Nicky went storming out of the house, looking for Jimmy. Nicky’s face was red and sweaty. His teeth were clenched tight. His heart was beating fast, and his chest was heaving up and down. His hands were shaking. His entire body was shuddering. His insides felt so tight, like he was going to snap in two. His mind was a jumble of angry thoughts.

Nicky found Jimmy hanging out with Abe across the street, by one of the big oak trees that the boys liked to climb. As soon as Jimmy saw Nicky coming at him, he knew he had trouble. Nicky ran up to Jimmy, right into his face. He was so full of emotion that he started crying and screaming at Jimmy all at once. “You don’t bother my sister, you understand! How could you push her! What the hell is wrong with you?” Nicky screamed, as his chest slammed into Jimmy. “She was being a real pain, driving me crazy!” Jimmy yelled, pushing Nicky back a few steps. Nicky screamed back at Jimmy. “She’s a girl! Are you supposed to be some kind of tough guy, pushing around a girl, you stupid moron!” Jimmy didn’t like what Nicky was saying about him, especially in front of Abe. “She was being a pain, I told you that already, you dumb ass! She had it coming!”

SNAP! The tension that had been building inside Nicky like a pressure cooker finally came gushing out. Nicky charged at Jimmy like a wild bull, knocking him down. Both boys tumbled to the ground. Jimmy and Nicky bounced up quickly, with Jimmy getting on his feet a bit faster than Nicky. Jimmy charged back at Nicky, just as Nicky was straightening up from the ground. Nicky reacted quickly, and managed to just barely sidestep him. Just as Jimmy was charging past him, Nicky lunged at Jimmy, reached out with both arms, and put him in a head lock, abruptly stopping Jimmy’s charge. All that anger was now channeled into Nicky’s arms, transforming them into a human vice grip. Nicky tightened his grip around Jimmy’s head, and yanked his head down nearly to the floor. Jimmy’s face was turning purple. “You had enough!” Nicky yelled down at him. Jimmy thought about it for a second. “OK, OK, Uncle!” Jimmy yelled back. Abe had watched the fight, and his respect for Nicky grew enormously in that moment of time. The fight ended almost as quickly as it had started. Both boys were hunched over catching their breath.

“OK, why don’t the both of you shake hands?” Abe asked hopefully. Nicky and Jimmy looked at each other for a couple of seconds and shook hands. Jimmy didn’t bother Fran anymore.

Nicky and Fran silently watched the rain and lightning a bit longer, both feeling very contented, and then went their separate ways. Add to CCNow Cart
